Our Giving Areas

To achieve our mission, CARESTAR is focused on investing in the systems, processes, and policies that guide and comprise emergency response in California. Our giving areas are designed to activate real and lasting change to ensure that all people experience emergency and prehospital care that is equitable, unified, and compassionate.

In addition to the outlined areas below, we also support several strategic partnerships focused on engaging communities as catalysts for systemic transformation, and key initiatives reimagining emergency and prehospital care with a racial equity lens.

RESEARCH

We fund research identifying gaps, challenges, best practices, and innovations to bring greater racial equity to emergency and prehospital care.

COLLABORATIVES

We fund multi-sector collaboratives that test new ideas, center community voices, and catalyze new and better ways for Californians to engage, receive, and experience equitable emergency response and care.

WORKFORCE

We fund initiatives to build a more diverse and inclusive EMS workforce in California, to better reflect communities served.

POLICY

We fund state and local policy initiatives, and partner with advocacy organizations, to incentive innovation and equitable, community centered care.

How We Fund

Generally speaking, we award unrestricted, multi-year grants as much as possible, offering the following types of funding:

  • General Operating Grants – to support organizations that are in alignment with our mission, vision and priorities.

  • Project/Program Grants – to support specific work, or programs, that are in alignment with our mission, vision and priorities.

  • Specific Awards and Initiatives – these grants have specific focus areas and application processes. They are announced periodically throughout the year on our website and via social media.

If you'd like to provide details about your organization or project for consideration, please send a brief summary (approximately 200-300 words) via email to grants@carestarfoundation.org.

*We maintain a 15% indirect rate cap for project grants.

Where We Fund

The CARESTAR Foundation works with Candid, a non-profit that offers data and insights about the social sector, to provide mapping tools to view and sort our grants data by a variety of criteria. We hope this tool helps to provide a comprehensive geographic picture of the extent and reach of CARESTAR's grantmaking across the state of California.

*Disclaimer: Please note that Candid's data reflects the location where the grant recipient is based and not necessarily where the grant money was ultimately used. In addition, the information generated by Candid may vary from data reported elsewhere due to the timing of when and how CARESTAR reports grants to Candid.
